Are you prepared for an emergency?

September is Emergency Preparedness Month. Because this is such an important topic and many people don’t have a plan in place, I thought I would share some of my favorite tips and resources for putting together a family/pet emergency plan and creating disaster kits again this year:

Develop a Plan –

  • Know how to contact family members
  • Coordinate meeting places
  • Map out escape routes
  • Know where your utility shut-off valves are located
  • Make a plan for your pets
  • Download a Family Emergency Plan

Create a Kit –

  • For a comprehensive list of items to include in your kit, go to the FEMA website
  • To purchase ready made kits for your home, office, car and pets, check out QuakeKare

Other –

  • Program emergency contact info under ICE (in case of emergency) in your phone for emergency personnel
  • Complete contact cards for every person in family and keep in wallet or school bags

If you don’t have an emergency plan, I hope this month’s tip will motivate you to create one. For more information about emergency preparation, go to http://www.ready.gov/
